Hi loyal listeners! You may have noticed Career Matters has been pre-empted a few times this Fall because of Football. We’re off again this coming weekend, and we’re in wait and see mode if JMU goes to the playoffs and what time those games will be played. So we may, or may not be back in two weeks, depending on the schedule.

New Tools — Vizualize.me

Recently launched, Vizualize.me is still in the beta phase. The site allows you to merge your LinkedIn Profile into an online resume timeline. And you can edit it, if you need to. I like the idea, but hate the way the site is spelled. If you spell the domain Vizualize with an ‘s’, you land on a cyber-squatter resume site. Here’s how my resume turned out.

Are you grammatically challenged? Check out Grammerly.com, where you can copy and paste your test into the site’s webform, and it will analyze data for bad grammar.

I tried it a few times and so far it’s fairly accurate. I like the fact that it explains in detail what the grammar rules are as it corrects your work.

CREATE A PORTFOLIO as a leave-behind at your job interview. Include the following:

1. Letter of Introduction

2. A copy of your resume or bio

3. Samples of your work, such as press releases, scripts you’ve written, brochures you’ve created, photographs you’ve taken, or anything else you designed, just as long as it’s not confidential materials.

4. Copies of training certificates, college diplomas, specialty licenses, award certificates and letters from satisfied customers.

You can purchase a portfolio maker with plastic sleeves at your local office supply store.

CareerFest is Coming!

Tuesday, September 13h 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the Roanoke Times’ annual CareerFest, held at the Salem Civic Center. Here is a Career Fest Flyer, that lists free workshops presented by National College, along with a map of the event.

Don’t forget to dress up and bring a recent resume. And while you’re there, stop by the Resume Review area and say hello! I’ll be there critiquing resumes along with several colleagues from Virginia Tech and Ferrum College.
